Safety

Players currently under contract:
Tyrann Mathieu
Juan Thornhill
Daniel Sorensen
Armani Watts

Need for a starter: 3
Need for depth: 7

Assuming the Chiefs don’t release any of their current players, the Chiefs are pretty set at safety. The only reason these rankings are where they are is because of Juan Thornhill’s status recovering from knee surgery. If Thornhill recovers in time for the start of the regular season the Chiefs will be fine with the four safeties currently under contract. The questions around Thornhill’s recovery time mean the Chiefs should probably add one depth safety for insurance to replace Jordan Lucas whose contract is up.

Tyrann Mathieu is a star. Daniel Sorensen has proven himself a valuable guy to have on the roster. He filled in well for Thornhill and is a valuable special teams contributor as well. Armani Watts is solid 4th safety. If Thornhill does miss time the Chifes can get by with Mathieu, Sorensen, and Watts, but they would need another player for depth. Kendall Fuller was getting reps at safety too after Thornhill went down so there’s also the possibility that they’ll target another safety even if Thornhill is looking ready to go as insurance. Either way, it’s not what I would call a top priority position for the Chiefs this offseason.

Finally, let’s take a quick look at the specialists.
