The Seattle Seahawks and Russell Wilson

Russell Wilson has been with the Seattle Seahawks for eight seasons. The Seahawks and Wilson got off to a great start, winning the Super Bowl in his second season in the NFL and then coming within a goal line interception of repeating in his third season. Seattle has made the playoffs in four of the five seasons since that Super Bowl loss, but have failed to make it out of the divisional round since then.

If anything, Russell Wilson’s play has only gotten better since Seattle’s Super Bowl appearances. While he was an important part of their Super Bowl teams he has largely carried the Seahawks the past few seasons as the overall talent around him has dropped off. In the past five seasons Wilson has averaged almost 4,000 yards per season with over 30 touchdowns and only about 8 interceptions per year. He’s also averaged over 400 yards rushing a season during that time.

The problem for the Seahawks is that the once dominant defense has dropped off significantly. This past season they were in the bottom third of the league in both yards and points allowed on the season. It’s also fair to criticize the players they have surrounded Wilson with on offense. His offensive line has had major problems at times and the other skill positions on offense have been questionable at times as well.

Like I said of the Steelers, the Chiefs don’t have to worry about relying on an elite defense like Seattle did to build a dynasty, but I do think there is a lesson to learn about a star quarterback needing a talented supporting cast on both sides of the ball. As K.C. enters contract negotiations with Patrick Mahomes, it is important that they be able to continue to afford to keep talented players around Mahomes. Wilson has been fantastic the past several seasons, but the Seahawks haven’t been able to make another serious run because the rest of the roster hasn’t been good enough.

Speaking of great quarterbacks, there have been a couple of first ballot Hall of Famers that had the primes of their careers during the “Patriot Era”. So what ultimately kept them from developing dynasties of their own?
