Kansas City Chiefs pass rusher Terrell Suggs has given his teammates some important perspective about playing in the Super Bowl.

From the outside, it’s easy for us as fans to assume that the Kansas City Chiefs just made their first of several Super Bowl appearances to come. Despite a bleak history that kept the team away from the big game for the last 50 years, these Chiefs, led by Patrick Mahomes, seem primed to make a very real run at a dynasty in these post-Patriot years.

Fans aren’t the only ones who feel this way. Vegas oddsmakers have had the Chiefs sitting as the favorites to win the Super Bowl next year for some time, even before they made SBLIV.

Perhaps those predictions will come true. Maybe the Chiefs are the next team to find themselves generating some near-annual experience on the game’s biggest stage. However, Terrell Suggs is here to remind players that those expectations often fall short. His experience is helping Chiefs teammates soak in the game this year because the future, despite such predictions, remains unknown.

As reporters recently sat with Suggs during Super Bowl media sessions, Suggs was asked what messages he’s bringing to Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs these days.

“It’s easy to get distracted, to get caught up in everything,” said Suggs, “but I mean I think all of us, not just myself but the team, does a good job of realizing that this portion of it is this portion of it but we know the reason why we’re here, to play another football game, to win the last football game of the year.

“To enjoy it. It’s the biggest stage and there’s no guarantee you’ll ever make it back here again. It took me eight years to get back.”

Suggs is the only veteran with Super Bowl experience on the defense (offensive lineman Stefen Wisniewski is the other), which gives him a platform other teammates don’t have. For the Chiefs it’s been a very welcome late-season addition to bring Suggs aboard immediately following the loss of defensive end Alex Okafor due to injury.

“There’s no guarantee, like I said,” continued Suggs. “I think Dan Marino only played in one Super Bowl his whole career. You gotta look at learned lessons from the past … when you get there, you wanna take advantage of it and definitely appreciate the moment. Enjoy everything. Enjoy every minute.”
