The Kansas City Chiefs officially placed safety Juan Thornhill on injured reserve and have replaced him on the active roster with guard Ryan Hunter.
The Kansas City Chiefs have finally made the roster move to replace injured safety Juan Thornhill by placing the rookie on injured reserve and bringing offensive lineman Ryan Hunter to the active roster.
Hunter is a developmental offensive line prospect who has worked with the Chiefs for the last couple years. A fellow Canadian along with Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, Hunter was brought in as an undrafted free agent in 2018 by general manager Brett Veach to bolster the offensive front. He stuck on the practice squad through last season and reached agreement for a reserve/futures deal last January.
Hunter played very poorly in a small sample size earlier this year in the team’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Injuries decimated the Chiefs’ line to the point that Hunter was needed for 14 snaps, but he failed to perform adequately enough to remain in the picture for long. The Chiefs moved on to Stefen Wisniewski and other options to help replace starters like Andrew Wylie to injury.
Still Hunter gives the Chiefs a nice big frame upon which to try to project some potential at tackle or along the interior. His experience at Bowling Green will help him on the outside, but the Chiefs look as if they are wanting to push him inside as a pro. Hunter, who is still only 24, looks like a good bet to remain with the team on another futures deal if he’s interested.
