Bengals clinch number 1 draft pick, Dolphins fall to fifth
The tight race for the number one overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft has concluded. After losing to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, the Cincinnati Bengals have clinched the number one draft pick. Miami falls to the fifth pick following the overtime win. While many have accused the Dolphins of tanking in 2019 to get the first overall pick, the players and coaching staff are not tanking as many of them are auditioning for new jobs in 2020.
As for the game itself, it was an old fashioned shootout against the two teams. Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton threw 33 of 56 for 296 yards and 4 touchdowns. Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick topped that performance going 31 of 52 for 429 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Miami kicked a field goal late into overtime to get the victory in this matchup of the NFL’s dregs.
Cincinnati has been projected by just about any analyst to take LSU quarterback Joe Burrow. The Heisman Trophy winner has had a remarkable season in 2019. Burrow is more than a one year wonder like Mitch Trubisky, and the Bengals need a quarterback that can take them to the next level. Cincinnati has not won a playoff game since 1991.
The new draft order consists of the Bengals taking the first pick with the Washington Redskins, taking the second following their loss to the New York Giants. With the Giants falling from second to fourth, the Detroit Lions now hold the third overall pick. Rounding out the top five is the Dolphins at 4-11.
