The Kansas City Chiefs will sit LeSean McCoy as a healthy scratch for the team’s Sunday night showdown against the Chicago Bears.
The Kansas City Chiefs have decided to continue to rest running back LeSean McCoy for the postseason and they’ve indicated he is a healthy scratch (or inactive) for the team’s Sunday night game against the Chicago Bears.
The Chiefs recently got back Damien Williams from the injured list, so Sunday night is a good time to watch him get back into game shape after being out since Week 11. Williams will be joined by Spencer Ware and Darwin Thompson to round out the Chiefs backfield.
Williams was a sparkplug for the Chiefs last year at this time, coming alive in December and continuing into the postseason. Unfortunately this year, injuries have slowed him all year and the team’s committee approach hasn’t given way to any significant performers in a down year for the entire unit on the depth chart. The Chiefs are likely hoping to see what he can do if given a decent amount of reps while also saving McCoy for when it matters most,
McCoy has shown the familiar burst that has made him such an offensive threat since he first entered the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2009. However, a couple fumbles have frustrated fans and coaches and, in general, Reid has made it an ongoing theme to limit his carries in a form of load management that will hopefully yield fresh legs in January.
It will be interesting to watch snap counts after tonight’s game in the backfield to see if any particular theme emerges. Maybe Darwin Thompson will be given a real chance to showcase his skills instead of just getting the occasional drive. Maybe Spencer Ware will continue to grow on the staff since his recent signing. Or perhaps Williams is ready to go after sitting with a rib injury the last few weeks.
McCoy has 101 carries for 465 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns so far this season. He’s also caught 28 passes for another 181 yards and 1 touchdown.
