The Kansas City Chiefs have officially released Joey Ivie from the active roster and replaced him with Demone Harris, a Ravens practice squad player.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to make moves to alter their defensive front in the face of frustrating injuries. With their latest move, they have signed away defensive lineman Demone Harris and have released defensive tackle Joey Ivie from the active roster.

Harris, a former defensive end for the University of Buffalo, entered the National Football League as an undrafted free agent in 2018 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He spent the majority of the season on the team’s practice squad and looked ready for the same this season until he was released in mid-October. The Ravens then signed him to their practice squad, which is where the Chiefs found him. Harris also received UDFA offers from the Detroit Lions, New York Giants and Denver Broncos.

The Chiefs must think highly of Harris since they are using an active roster spot on him. Signing a player away from a practice squad is free for any team to do but that player must remain on the active roster (even if inactive on game days).

Ivie, a mammoth lineman at 6’3 and 301 lbs., impressed the Chiefs this summer with a strong preseason showing. He beat out Justin Hamilton for one of the last spots on the active roster but that didn’t necessarily translate to regular season impact. Ivie played in only 5 games with a total of 87 defensive snaps to his name, although he did play 27 in the team’s most recent win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Ivie has previously played with the Dallas Cowboys, Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons.
