The Kansas City Chiefs have fallen to 6-4 on the year after losing to the Tennessee Titans last week. Can the Chiefs still win Super Bowl LIV this year?
Things have been better in Chiefs Kingdom. The Kansas City Chiefs find themselves at 6-4 on the year after losing an unthinkable game to the Tennessee Titans in Nashville. Kansas City still has the lead in the AFC West, but the Oakland Raiders are now only half a game back of the Chiefs for the division lead. With this run bad defense, can the Chiefs win the Super Bowl in 2019 (11:40)?
On this week’s episode of Stacking the Box, FanSided‘s Matt Verderame and Mark Carman, along with former Chiefs offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, assess the damage done to the Chiefs in The Music City. While the offense is great, Schwartz seems to have next to no faith in this Kansas City defense. Here is what he had to say about the Chiefs’ chances of getting to Miami in February.
“No, I thought the Patriots were going to win anyway. So all these people had the Chiefs, I never did. My brother plays for the Chiefs and I picked the Patriots to win the Super Bowl this year. It’s okay to just not be a homer when I don’t think the Chiefs defense is any good.”
Schwartz would go on to give the Kansas City defense some credit, citing that the Chiefs played well on that side of the ball when Patrick Mahomes was out with his injury. He does wonder if the Chiefs defense mentally took a step back this past week in knowing that Mahomes was back on the field after dislocating his kneecap on Thursday Night Football against the Denver Broncos.
At the end of the day, the Chiefs will always have a fighting chance as long as they have a healthy Mahomes playing at a high level. But winning in the postseason is all about ball control and playing defense. Kansas City will let anybody and their brother run the ball down their throat. It happened with Tennessee, it happened with the Indianapolis Colts, it’ll probably happen again.
Until Kansas City is able to rectify a few things on the defensive side of the ball, the Chiefs will only have one way to win and this is to win shootouts. You can do that for maybe a game or two in the NFL playoffs, especially if you play in a dome, but bad run defense is not a recipe for success if the Chiefs have aspirations of reaching the Super Bowl for the first time since 1970 this season.
