Geoff Schwartz: Tyreek Hill isn’t needed for the Chiefs offense to be great
Geoff Schwartz responds to the Kansas City Chiefs critics, citing that the offense doesn’t need Tyreek Hill to be great, it needs Travis Kelce!
The Kansas City Chiefs find themselves at 5-2 and atop the AFC West heading into Week 8’s home game on Sunday Night Football against the Green Bay Packers. However, they will be without starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, how left last Thursday night’s game with a dislocated kneecap. It will be The Matt Moore Show in primetime against Green Bay this week.
On this week’s episode of Stacking the Box, FanSided‘s Matt Verderame and Mark Carman, along with former NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, look at what the Chiefs are going to do without Mahomes for at least a few weeks and who is the most important player on offense. Schwartz argues that it’s not wide receiver Tyreek Hill, but tight end Travis Kelce.
“If you look at the advanced numbers from the Chiefs offense, they were totally fine without Tyreek Hill,” said Schwartz. “They’ve been totally fine without him, they have other options. They have drafted [Mecole] Hardman to replace him.”
“The reason the fans are so attached to the offense is it’s because it’s the only way they’re winning. And that’s the problem, they only win one way…[Hill’s] not needed for this offense to be great…The No. 1 player outside of Pat Mahomes who is important to this offense is Travis Freaking Kelce, it’s not Tyreek Hill!”
Schwartz would double-down on his take of the Chiefs considering trading Hill for Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson because this move would help Kansas City on both pass defense and run defense. Improving pass defense is obvious, but by having a lock-down corner like Peterson, this would allow the safety to stack the box and perform better against the run.
Verderame would respond by saying that it won’t be Hill that the Chiefs will be moving off this offseason, it’ll be another wide receiver in Sammy Watkins, who Kansas City overpaid a fortune for to be a mid-tier receiver. Either way, changes might be coming to the Chiefs’ receiving corps and maybe Kansas City will get some semblance of talent on defense and preferably in its secondary.
Here are a few other topics that were discussed on this week’s episode of Stacking the Box:
- There’s no timetable on Mahomes coming back – 8:05
- Chiefs will be fine if they go 0-2 without Mahomes – 9:05
- Chiefs can’t rush Mahomes back, or else – 12:45
- Packers-Chiefs odds – 37:40
All this and more!
