Final Thoughts

It’s been a rough couple weeks for the Chiefs as they have looked off for two straight weeks. Some of that has to do with the number of injuries they have sustained. The offense was without left tackle Eric Fisher and wide receivers Sammy Watkins and Tyreek Hill. As the game went on, the injuries piled up even more with left guard Andrew Wylie and defensive tackle Chris Jones both leaving the game. Defensive end Frank Clark was out for a series as he looked like something was in pain along with Patrick Mahomes getting his ankle stepped on.

Fans are frustrated that their team isn’t dominating the way they are used to and trying to point the finger at one player or one side of the ball. Both sides have underperformed and it finally resulted in a loss. The biggest concern surrounding Kansas City for most fans would be the trenches.

It all started in Week 1 when the Jacksonville Jaguars were able to get hits on Mahomes consistently and it looked like he might leave the game. That was the first dose of mortality for Mahomes that the fans had experienced and it has haunted our dreams ever since. During back to back weeks, the line has been unable to protect Mahomes whether from the edge or up the middle. Something has to change and quick.

The hope is that the team can get healthy quick before taking on the Houston Texans next week. I would also hope that they figure a way out to bring back offensive guard Jeff Allen this coming week who they released in order to sign Morris Claiborne following the end of his suspension. Putting an inexperienced undrafted free agent next to Cam Erving in a game that Mahomes was already taking a beating was the last thing we needed to see.

Kansas City is still sitting comfortably as the two seed in the AFC which is the bright side. There are going to be ugly games and losses that you wouldn’t expect. Even the New England Patriots drop a few every year that they shouldn’t and no one is complaining in their fan base. I would like to see some better game plans going forward when the offensive line is struggling instead of long-developing plays that allow time for defenses to get hits on Mahomes.
