Jordan Lucas, safety

The former Miami Dolphin has seen more snaps than fellow backup Armani Watts, but there are two reasons the team is likely to keep Watts over Lucas. One is the fourth-round pick Veach spent to acquire Watts just one year ago. The other reason is that Lucas had an abhorrent game against Detroit. It wasn’t just bad; it was abhorrent.

It’s not often you’d say one game was enough to earn a pink slip, but the timing couldn’t have been worse for Lucas to have a game that bad. The stars may have aligned for Lucas to be the odd man out this week.

It’s not unheard of to keep five safeties in the long-term. Especially considering Steve Spagnuolo’s proclivity to use three safeties in his dime packages, Lucas could still have a role. We saw some plays against Baltimore in which four safeties, including Lucas, were on the field at the same time.
