With a game-winning drive from Patrick Mahomes, multiple turnovers, and a controversial touchdown, there is plenty to take away from Week 4.

Only two teams have managed to get to 4-0 after week 4: the Patriots, who gave the Bills three chances at a victory in a 16-10 road win, and the Kansas City Chiefs, who made an impressive comeback in the last few minutes for a 34-30 victory over the Detroit Lions.

With a showdown scheduled for week14, it is starting to feel like an episode of Dragon Ball Z. “Will Patrick Mahomes and crew keep strong as Tom Brady and the Patriots squad approaches? Can Tyreek Hill‘s recovery time in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber prepare him for the incoming wave of enemies? Find out next week on another exciting installment of Chiefs football.”

Much like Goku and the various heroes of the Dragon Ball universe, the Chiefs were pushed to their absolute limit in their Week 4 victory over the Lions, complete with a last-second victory led by the star of the show, Patrick Mahomes.  In a game that remained competitive and close until the final seconds ticked off the clock, plenty of storylines arose, most of which will be written about plenty of times in the next few days.

With an abundance of headlines and four quarters of competitive play, what stood out as opportunities for growth and learning for the Chiefs? What players stood out among a lot of mediocre play? What lessons can players and fans alike learn from the Chiefs’ Week 4 victory over the Lions?

Breeland has been a steady performer

Kansas City defense looked really bad on Sunday, giving up 447 yards total and 3 passing touchdowns and letting the Lions drive into the red zone six times. But it is not all bad for the Chiefs, as they forced two turnovers there, one of which Bashaud Breeland took 100 yards for a touchdown.

Breeland showed great situational awareness as well as great discipline when he saw the ball squeezed out of the pile while Kerryon Johnson fought for extra yardage. He was aware enough to realize the whistles had not been blown and disciplined enough to pick up the live ball and run with it.

Fortunately, Breeland’s highlights did not stop there, as the defensive back was able to pick up two tackles, break up a pass, and stop several outside runs. It’s worth noting that Breeland has been a steady performer in the Chiefs secondary so far. He picked up an interception in Oakland, a fumble in Jacksonville and has been a solid corner in an otherwise weak secondary.

With the return of Morris Claiborne this week, the Chiefs will have more depth and talent among their pass defenders than ever this year.
