Chiefs lose cornerback Torry McTyer off practice squad to Bengals

The Kansas City Chiefs have lost cornerback Torry McTyer off of their practice squad to the Cincinnati Bengals.
According to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, the Cincinnati Bengals have come calling with a claim on cornerback Torry McTyer from the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad. That means the Chiefs now have a hole to fill after losing McTyer for nothing.
The Chiefs added McTyer to the practice squad after active rosters were due in early September. McTyer had never once played for the Chiefs, but for a team in need of cornerback help and depth, the signing made sense. McTyer came into the league in 2017 with the Miami Dolphins and played in 22 games for them over the last two years, including four starts made last season. He had 30 tackles and 4 passes defended, hence the reason it made sense for Veach to see what he brought to the table in terms of talent.
The Bengals made the move because they lost Darius Phillips due to injury. It’s a big loss for the Bengals as Phillips was showing strong in his second season in the NFL. He intercepted a pass on Sunday against the Bills which kickstarted the team’s comeback. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown although it was called back due to penalty.
NFL teams are allowed to sign several players to their respective practice squads once active rosters are due entering the regular season, and the developmental part of the roster acts as a minor league of sorts. However, any player is available for any other franchise to claim and place on their active roster whenever they would like without repercussions. It’s all about risk management for a team to know who to place on the practice squad or who to try to stash on the active roster with such precious few spots available.
The best recent example of the Chiefs doing the same can be found in their claim on kicker Harrison Butker from the Carolina Panthers in 2017.
