The Kansas City Chiefs have signed offensive lineman Greg Senat away from the Baltimore Ravens prior to the showdown between both teams in Week 3.
Only time will tell whether or not the Kansas City Chiefs have any long-term interest in offensive tackle Greg Senat or not, but for now they have claimed the offensive lineman away from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad—the very team they are preparing to face in Week 3.
The Chiefs announced the roster move on Monday with word that they had cleared a roster spot via the release of defensive tackle Joey Ivie. Senat now takes over Ivie’s spot on the active roster but it remains to be seen whether this is a permanent change or whether we will see Ivie back in red and gold sooner than later.
Senat is a big 6’8, 305 lb. prospect from a small school called Wagner. He was the Ravens sixth round choice in the 2018 NFL Draft but he sat out his entire rookie campaign due to injury. This year, he made the team’s practice squad but was recently released to make room for cornerback Maurice Canady.
While Senat might be talented and worth a look, the move feels very short-term for two primary reasons. One, the Chiefs play the Ravens in Week 3 in their home opener and it can’t hurt to ask a player who practiced with Lamar Jackson and company everything he knows about the offensive game plan.
What’s even more telling is that Senat is the 11th offensive lineman currently on the Chiefs active roster. Even if you factor in Eric Fisher‘s current groin injury, one that limited him to four total snaps on Sunday in the victory against the Oakland Raiders, the Chiefs are still carrying more than a typical Andy Reid roster. The fact that the Chiefs rid themselves of a promising defensive lineman to make room for yet another offensive lineman makes little sense—unless all parties involved knew it was going to be quick work overall.
Ivie surprised some analysts and fans by making the active roster out of training camp over Justin Hamilton. Ivie showed solid strength and disruption from the interior and the Chiefs rewarded him for it. He will now be available to claim on waivers by any other team until 4:00 p.m. E.T. on Tuesday.
