Patrick Mahomes magic keeps the Kansas City Chiefs perfect on the season behind a 28 point outburst in the second quarter.
When the game kicked off between the visiting Kansas City Chiefs and the host Oakland Raiders, the atmosphere in Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum was out of this world.
In the final matchup between two storied franchises in the black hole, and what will be the final game that features a baseball infield in the middle of a football field (as the Raiders do not return home until November 2nd), the crowd was understandably raucous. Mix that intense atmosphere with the Kansas City defense spotting the Raiders a 10-point lead and you have cause for concern on the Chiefs’ side.
The Raiders began the game with a near-perfect opening as the Chiefs offense stalled and the Raiders were moving the ball with ease in an opening quarter that stopped the Chiefs first quarter scoring record at 22 consecutive games. Down by 10 points and battling a plethora of injuries, the Raiders looked like they were ready to make this a serious challenge.
Then the momentum changed on a dime. Kansas City Chiefs franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes told the Kingdom to relax as he dialed up a touchdown to Demarcus Robinson on the first play of the second quarter and the Chiefs never looked back from that point. Mahomes went on to throw four touchdown passes in the second quarter, including the opening 44 yard strike to Robinson.
From there, Mahomes dialed up a 42 yard pass to Mecole Hardman, who had his first NFL touchdown on the play. Tight end Travis Kelce caught a 27 yard touchdown to go up 21-10, and Mahomes came back to DRob for 39 yards to close the first half. The Chiefs scored 28 unanswered points in the frame to take a commanding 28-10 lead into the halftime break.
In the absence of Tyreek Hill, Robinson led the Chiefs in receiving as he hauled in 6 receptions for 172 yards including 2 touchdowns. Hardman had a very good day, as the rookie trying to help fill the void left by Hill earned 61 yards on 4 catches and a touchdown, he also had a long touchdown called back due to a holding penalty.
Even in a game where the Chiefs failed to score in three of four quarters, the team still stuck it to a Raiders team that looked much better during the first five quarters of the new year. Then Mahomes worked his magic and the game was out of reach.
Final Score: 28-10, Chiefs
