Former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Mark Fields didn’t last long with the Minnesota Vikings despite the fact that the team just traded for him.
It wasn’t a big trade at all, but it still looks quite clear that Brett Veach got the better end of the deal.
It was only two weeks ago that the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings hooked up on a trade that sent rookie cornerback Mark Fields to the Vikes in exchange for a 2021 7th round draft choice. Now the Vikings have released Fields to prepare their roster for Week 2.
Fields joined the Chiefs as a rookie free agent after he went undrafted out of Clemson. Fields’ natural ability and level of competition in college made him a heralded addition to the team’s undrafted free agent list. Unfortunately, Fields could never separate himself from a lackluster effort in preseason games and inconsistent play overall.
It was a relief the Chiefs signed Fields in the first place after the draft and quite surprising when he didn’t make the team. It was even more of a shock when the Vikings came calling for a new cornerback considering the Chiefs were often linked with the Vikings this offseason in potential trade talks for one of Minnesota’s corners—namely, Trae Waynes, Xavier Rhodes, Mackensie Alexander.
Fields now hits the waiver wire and it’s clear that some team will take the same chance as the Chiefs and Vikings, regardless of the results so far. As for the Chiefs, their search for a useful cornerback continues via new trade rumors as they try to solve boundary corner issues on a roster that is otherwise ready for a Super Bowl.
