Patrick Mahomes excited by LeSean McCoy signing with Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes spoke to Chiefs reporters on Wednesday about the addition of LeSean McCoy to the team’s roster earlier this week.
It’s really something when you line up the names together: Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Mecole Hardman, Travis Kelce, Demarcus Robinson, Damien Williams, LeSean McCoy, Darwin Thompson.
The inclusion of McCoy in that group of Kansas City Chiefs offensive weapons is the newest addition, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes is excited by the prospect of bringing him into the mix. After all, a new pass catcher is yet another body for which opposing defenses must account—an already impossible task given the quality and quantity of what the Chiefs have put together.
McCoy, a running back let go by the Buffalo Bills earlier this week, is familiar enough with Andy Reid as a head coach from his days in Philadelphia, where the two were first together with the Eagles franchise. Mahomes spoke with reporters on Wednesday and said McCoy has already impressed the team with how quickly he’s picking up this offense.
“He’s obviously been a great player in this league for a long time and someone is that is going to come in and I’ve learned is a very intelligent guy that seems to be picking up the offense fast,” said Mahomes. “Any time you add good players to this team, I’m going to be excited about finding a way to win a football game every single week.”
While McCoy will get his touches in the backfield, Mahomes was also quick to mention the team’s primary running back before adding McCoy. Damien Williams showed the team late last season what he can do, and general manager Brett Veach responded in kind with a two-year contract extension.
“I think Damien is someone that can make plays running the ball and catching the ball as well, but anytime you add great players to this team, you’re going to keep adding depth,” said Mahomes. “I feel at every single position, we can go three or four deep and we still have guys that can make plays. That makes my job a lot easier when you’re able to do that.”
McCoy, who recently turned 31 years old, joins a stable of backs that also includes Darwin Thompson, the team’s sixth round pick out of Utah State, and Darrel Williams, a second-year back from Louisiana State. Even after trading Carlos Hyde, the Chiefs have a crowded backfield in which any single player could contribute in a meaningful way.
McCoy can only hope that he can return to his Pro Bowl ways, a streak of five years that ended in 2018 behind a pitiful offensive line in Buffalo. If he can fight back his advancing age, the combination of Reid and Mahomes at work with McCoy could yield strong dividends.
