LeSean McCoy has officially joined Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs on a one-year deal worth a reported $4 million.
Veteran running back LeSean McCoy didn’t have to wait long to find a brand new home. On a day in which he was released from the Buffalo Bills, the six-time Pro Bowler has a new home with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Adam Schefter is reporting the terms of McCoy’s new deal as a one year contract worth $4 million.
The Chiefs were one of four reported suitors, per Ian Rapoport, along with the L.A. Chargers, New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles would have represented a homecoming back to the team that first drafted him, but instead he joins the Chiefs in a reunion with his former head coach during four of those same years in Philly in Andy Reid.
McCoy’s presence on the Chiefs gives the NFL’s most potent offense another weapon already familiar with Reid’s schemes. However, it will be interesting to see how many touches McCoy is given in a backfield that already features Damien Williams, impressive rookie Darwin Thompson and Darrel Williams.
If McCoy can prove that last year’s downturn in performance was more about the Bills porous line and poor offense, he has a good chance to garner a decent share of the workload out of the backfield. If not, the total guarantees here are only $3 million which means the Chiefs, who still have over $18 million in cap space, aren’t out too much with the risk.
McCoy, who is 31 years old, averaged a career low 3.2 yards per carry last year in Buffalo. The Chiefs are his third NFL franchise.
