Kansas City Chiefs trade Mark Fields to Minnesota Vikings

The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly dealt Mark Fields to the Minnesota Vikings in a deal before roster cuts were due.
It’s not hard to believe that a cornerback is being traded between the Minnesota Vikings and the Kansas City Chiefs. It is hard to stomach the idea that the Chiefs are the ones trading away a defensive back.
Per NFL reporter Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs have traded cornerback Mark Fields to the Vikings in a deal before final roster cuts were due. The return is a 7th round pick in 2021.
Fields first signed with the Chiefs as a rookie free agent after the draft as one of the team’s most heralded acquisitions over the weekend. Fields made waves as part of Clemson’s acclaimed defense and has a nice raw skill set to play cornerback. Unfortunately his playing time this preseason with the Chiefs revealed weaknesses resulting in penalties and frustrating mistakes which likely had him on the outside of the Chiefs roster looking in.
The Vikings are dealing with a suspension for Holton Hill and some injury concerns around Mike Hughes, so Fields give them some developmental talent as well as depth.
It is interesting to see the Chiefs as the dealers in talent here given that the Vikings were often linked with the Chiefs as a potential trade suitor to deal one of their own top corners to K.C. Names like Xavier Rhodes and Trae Waynes were included in rumors of players who could draw Chiefs GM Brett Veach’s interest. Now instead it’s the Chiefs sending over support for the secondary.
As for the Chiefs, they will likely continue to search for more talent at cornerback while giving up a prospect they soured on in Fields to Minnesota.
