In the wake of a fractured ankle for backup quarterback Chad Henne, the Kansas City Chiefs have signed veteran quarterback Matt Moore.

The Kansas City Chiefs acted quickly in free agency to grab a replacement for backup quarterback Chad Henne after losing him to a fractured ankle and high ankle sprain with the signing of quarterback Matt Moore to the roster, per ESPN reporter Adam Schefter.

The Chiefs learned that Henne would miss time due to the fractured ankle over the weekend and surgery for Henne has been scheduled. As Terez Paylor reports, the Chiefs kicked the tires on Henne and Moore at the same time two offseasons ago and decided to go with Henne as their primary backup for Mahomes.

The fall from Henne to the other backup quarterbacks on the roster—priority free agent Kyle Shurmur and second-year holdover Chase Litton—was simply too great for a team with Super Bowl hopes, so it’s not surprising to see general manager Brett Veach angling for a free agent option to back up NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes.

Moore joins the Chiefs after sitting out the entire last season as a free agent. He spent the previous six seasons, concluding in 2017, with the Miami Dolphins as their primary backup for Ryan Tannehill and others after starting 12 games for them in his first season with the team back in 2011.

In his career, Moore has a 15-15 record as a starting quarterback in the NFL. He has a career completion rate of 59.6% with 45 passing touchdowns and 36 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 81.6.
