Tight Ends

On The Active Roster: Travis Kelce, Blake Bell, someone not currently on the roster

Practice Squad: John Lovett

IR: Deon Yelder

Cut: Nick Keizer, Manasseh Garner

We entered training camp worrying that the Chiefs may not have enough tight end depth behind starter Travis Kelce. After three preseason games I am still worried. Deon Yelder and John Lovett are both injured otherwise they might have both had a real shot at the roster. I’ve got Lovett on the practice squad because if healthy I think they’d like the time to develop him but he may end up on the IR as well.

Blake Bell wins the back up tight end spot basically by default but he hasn’t looked like an upgrade over Demetrius Harris at all. Bell had another bad drop on Saturday against the 49ers and while he’s flashed a few times too he simply looks painfully inconsistent. That is why I firmly believe the Chiefs will add another tight end to compete with Bell before the season starts. It’s one of two glaring holes I believe the roster has.

Should the Chiefs fail to find anyone to add to the roster and both Yelder and Lovett aren’t healthy then Nick Keizer would be the last man to get a shot at the 53 man roster. Overall, this group behind Kelce hasn’t done anything to give fans confidence that the Chiefs have the depth that they need at the position.
