When the Kansas City Chiefs called Jeff Allen about his interest in returning to the team for another season, the offensive lineman says he wasn’t surprised.

When Brett Veach picked up the phone to call Jeff Allen to ask him to return, once again, for another season with the Kansas City Chiefs, the offensive lineman says he wasn’t surprised.

This week, Veach, the Chiefs general manager, has brought back a couple familiar faces in Allen and wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas. When Allen met with reporters at his press conference on Tuesday, he admitted he wasn’t taken back by the call. He also refused to explain himself any further.

“No, I wasn’t surprised,” said Allen. “I’ll just leave it at that.”

It’s a cryptic way of saying he’s been in touch with the Chiefs to some degree all along and was aware of the team’s ongoing interest. Perhaps the team was waiting for enough of the preseason to go by in an exercise to check out the younger players more. Perhaps it was Allen waiting until the last minute before signing up for the rigors of an NFL season.

Either way, it’s curious to know that Allen knew this move was telegraphed for some time.

The good news is that Allen is thrilled to be back. “It feels awesome,” he says. “It feels like I’ve never left.”

Allen says both he and his family love the Chiefs organization and he was glad to come back for a run at a Super Bowl with people they “love.”

It’s just a good time in my life. Between me and my family, we felt like this was an opportunity where I get a chance to win a Super Bowl with a great organization, with great people—people that we love and like: good teammates, good coaches, front office, everything,” Allen says.

Allen admitted he “didn’t know the plan” for this weekend’s third preseason game and whether or not he would receive snaps. For now, the goal is getting ready for the regular season and if reps against the San Francisco 49ers will be a part of that, he’s ready for it.

“I’m just here to do my job,” says Allen.
