Chiefs vs. Steelers: Mo Claiborne won’t play in preseason game
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs are giving cornerback addition Morris Claiborne plenty of time to get back into game shape with word he’ll miss Week 2 of the preseason.
The Kansas City Chiefs signed veteran cornerback Morris Claiborne in recent days to help bolster the team’s secondary as they prepare for the regular season, but they’re going to have to wait to get a glimpse of how the unit looks together for at least another week with word that Claiborne will miss the second game of the preseason.v
The Chiefs travel to Pittsburgh to play the Steelers at Heinz Field on Saturday, but head coach Andy Reid said the team would be without Claiborne for the game after he also missed the opening salvo against the Cincinnati Bengals, a dominant 38-17 win for the Chiefs last Saturday.
Claiborne spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets and started 30 total games for them after finishing up his rookie contract with the Dallas Cowboys.
The Chiefs signed Claiborne to a one-year free agent deal that serves as greater security and competition at a position often called the thinnest on the team. Kendall Fuller is the full-time slot between boundary corners Charvarius Ward and Bashaud Breeland. Claiborne could also be a candidate for those starting reps, which means better competition in training camp—at least when he’s ready to suit up.
No timeline was given for Claiborne at this point but his absence means roster hopefuls like Herb Miller, D’Montre Wade, Dakari Monroe, Andrew Soroh, Rashad Fenton and others.
Claiborne set a career high with 14 passes defended and 2 interceptions last year in New York.
