The Kansas City Chiefs have veteran Bashaud Breeland back in practice after losing the cornerback for a few days with a thumb injury.

The cornerback position continues to be a position of concern for fans of the Kansas City Chiefs, but the good news is that the team has an assumed starter back and ready to practice on Tuesday after going without Bashaud Breeland for the last few days.

Entering training camp, Breeland was quickly lost due to a lacerated thumb. Such an injury needed obvious time to heal and kept the veteran cornerback from practicing with the first team defense as they come together in pads for the first time. Getting back out there will be important for Breeland as the Chiefs adjust their roster and know what they have on hand.

Breeland is expected to start outside at one cornerback position, but it’s not yet clear who will be outside on the other boundary. Kendall Fuller is clearly slated to stay inside, at least the way they’re breaking it down in camp thus far, as a slot corner which means names like Charcandrick West or even D’Montre Wade are being used outside. Wade has been one of the bigger surprises in camp so far.

The Chiefs are not only lacking star power at cornerback but they are also running a bit thin on options. Keith Reaser tore his Achilles tendon earlier this week and was lost for the season. Tremon Smith and Rashad Fenton and Mark Fields remain options for the Chiefs to fill in on special teams and sub packages.

The Chiefs signed Breeland this offseason as their only major move at cornerback despite the fact that it was known as a major position of need. Breeland is hoping to build on an impressive body of work late in the season with the Green Bay Packers. He’s playing on a one-year deal, so he stands to earn a major payday next offseason if he can help the Chiefs pass defense turn the corner.

Breeland had 20 tackles in 5 starts last year for the Packers. He also had 2 interceptions, 4 batted passes and 1 fumble recovery after signing later in the season than expected.
