So let’s take a second and talk about the team that every other team in the NFL is striving to be, the New England Patriots. The Patriots have dominated the NFL for years and are notorious for letting players leave before they start to decline or are wanting a huge payday.

The only real constants during their dynasty have been quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick. If the Patriots had a star player (other than Brady) due for a big payday and they had their most recent top draft pick at that position, another young player getting rave reviews from the coaching staff, and plenty of depth behind those guys, there is no way they would back up the bank truck to keep that star player. They just wouldn’t do it.

So that brings us to the question of the day: If the Chiefs young wideouts look like the real deal this coming season, is the smart move to let Tyreek Hill walk and spend that money on positions of greater need? Take your feelings and all the media circus stuff around him out of it. What is the smart business move here?

This obviously will be a moot point if guys like Hardman and Pringle don’t deliver this season. Then the Chiefs will be forced to keep Hill around and could end up spending more to do so than if they had worked something out this offseason. The Chiefs obviously need to keep Patrick Mahomes stocked with quality weapons so that he can be successful. He already has the most dangerous tight end in football in Travis Kelce. If Hardman and Pringle do step up, Robinson continues to improve, and Sammy Watkins were to agree to a reasonable extension, I think you can make an argument that the Chiefs would be okay without Hill.

The prevailing belief is still that Hill may miss a few games due to suspension to start this coming season. If that happens, it will be a great opportunity for us to see what this group of receivers can do in his absence. If they struggle, Hill’s value goes up. If they thrive and the offense doesn’t miss a beat without him, then the pressure to re-sign him goes down.

As training camp grows closer the wide receiver group is one of the most intriguing groups to keep an eye on. Will the Chiefs work to sign Hill this offseason? Will they let this year play out first? Will K.C.’s young wideouts step up and potentially make Hill expendable?

I for one, will definitely be focused on the receivers when the offense is working in training camp and the preseason games. Right now, Tyreek Hill certainly seems like an essential part of the Chiefs offense, but if we’ve learned anything about the NFL, it’s that sometimes NFL can stand for “not for long”.
