Former New York Jets offensive tackle Dieugot Joseph visited the Kansas City Chiefs for a free agent visit on Thursday.
NFL reporter Aaron Wilson noted that the Kansas City Chiefs hosted a free agent visit on Thursday at Arrowhead Stadium when former New York Jets offensive tackle Dieugot Joseph spent time with the team.
Joseph is every bit the sort of offensive tackle project that Chiefs and others like to take on in hopes of striking it rich at a position that can be hard to fill. Joseph was originally a defensive lineman when he came to Florida International, but he ended up making the switch fairly early in his career and landed a starting left tackle role for multiple seasons. He even earned honorable mention in Conference USA for his efforts during his final year.
Joseph’s measurables at 6’6, 293 lbs. gave him reasonable hope to land with an NFL team as a developmental tackle, so he turned his attention to the professional level in the 2017 NFL Draft. He landed with the Chicago Bears as a priority free agent after the draft but failed the make the active roster out of training camp. He was, however, signed to the team’s practice squad.
From there, it’s been a mixed bag of teams claiming him off of other team’s practice squads only to find he’s not ready for an active roster spot. The Baltimore Ravens grabbed him from the Bears and the Minnesota Vikings followed suit. He spent all of last season with the Jets on their practice squad and remained on a futures contract until he was finally released earlier this week.
For the Chiefs, Joseph would be another interesting player to add to a mix that includes Ryan Hunter, a Canadian import from last season, Pace Murphy, Justin Senior, Zack Golditch, and Dino Boyd. The Chiefs have to hope that at least one of these guys can rise above the competition to be the team’s swing tackle behind Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz. Andrew Wylie and Cam Erving also have experience at tackle, so it’s possible for others with positional versatility to fill in.
