Kansas City Chiefs enhance offense in most 2020 mock drafts
By Matt Conner
It’s never too early to project who the Kansas City Chiefs might take in the 2020 NFL Draft. Wait, that’s not true at all. Still, here we go.
Only hours after the conclusion of the 2019 NFL Draft, the first of the 2020 mocks began to emerge. That shouldn’t surprise any of us these days, given that the draft itself has become a 12-months-per-year business for some analysts.
If we take a closer look at some of the mocks, it’s clear that many draft analysts have the Chiefs already looking to bolster their offense in 2020, just one year after the team put up historic numbers and drafted another speedy wideout for themselves in second round pick Mecole Hardman out of Georgia.

If mock drafters are tuned in, they will recognize that offense should be the goal at that point. By the time next year’s draft rolls around, Travis Kelce will be on the other side of 30 with a (currently) frightening drop in talent on the depth chart after him. There’s not a single swing tackle around and both of the Chiefs starting bookends, Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz, are also nearing the same age threshold (or have arrived already). Sammy Watkins will be nearing the end of his contract, and Tyreek Hill and Kareem Hunt are still likely to be missed to varying degrees.
Basically, don’t be surprised if Brett Veach goes heavy on the offense in next year’s draft.
That’s why Dan Kadar of SB Nation has the Chiefs taking Oklahoma State wide receiver Tylan Wallace in the first round of his new 2020 mock draft.
"If Tyreek Hill is done in Kansas City, the Chiefs may need more than Mecole Hardman to replace him. Last season Wallace had 86 receptions for 1,491 yards and 12 touchdowns."
Over at the Draft Network, their 2020 mock draft has the Chiefs taking a running back in the first. He just so happens to also be the draft’s fastest player in Clemson running back Travis Etienne.
"Speed is the main component of the Chiefs’ offense, and adding a player who might just be the fastest man in all of college football makes this a perfect fit. Etienne has legit 4.3 — perhaps even 4.2 speed. At 5-foot-10, 200 pounds, he can be used as a true running back in the ground game but also in the passing game out of the backfield."
Over at 247 Sports, the Chiefs are sticking with Clemson but taking another wideout in Amari Rodgers.
"Rodgers is the final wide receiver from Clemson. He is the son of former Tennessee quarterback Tee Martin."
Not everyone is convinced, however, that the Chiefs need to think offense so early—at least not until they’ve addressed cornerback needs. NBC Sports has released a 2020 mock in which the Chiefs lock in on Virginia’s Bryce Hall.
"The secondary remains dicey, particularly on the outside, despite the addition of safety’s Tyrann Mathieu and Juan Thornhill. Hall, Thornhill’s teammate at Virginia, received first-team All-ACC honors in 2018 after leading the nation with 22 pass breakups."
The good news is we have 12 months to go. Or maybe that’s bad news. If you hate mocks, it’s going to be a long road ahead for you.
