Jordan Lucas OR Armani Watts – Starting Safety

Similar to the cornerback position, the Chiefs’ safety unit in 2018 was inconsistent at best in 2018. There were two primary reasons for this, the first being a lack of health.

Eric Berry has long been one of the most talented safeties in the entire league. Unfortunately, Father Time seemed to have caught up with him. He barely saw the field in 2018 and is now no longer with the team. Armani Watts, a reasonably high draft pick in the fourth round and a player who was gaining some momentum as a difference maker, only made it five games into the season before being moved to injured reserve.

The second reason for secondary problems was a lack of talent and experience. In the first case, the Chiefs brought back Ron Parker to shore up the safety position early in the season. Parker has a long history with the Chiefs, and he actually played relatively well early, but it wasn’t long before his age and lack of speed started to showcase itself.

Once the team had seen enough of the Parker experiment, it often left an inexperienced tandem of Eric Murray and Jordan Lucas on the field. Murray has since been traded from the team and is no longer a part of the equation. Lucas will likely have another chance to push for playing time in 2019.

With the major signing of Tyrann Mathieu, this absolutely locks up one of the starting safety spots but the other spot is up for grabs. The competition will likely be between Armani Watts, Jordan Lucas, and an eventual NFL Draft pick. We won’t know that pick until later this weekend, but several mocks have the Chiefs selecting a safety high.

Whether they take a player like Juan Thornhill in the second round or wait until the third round and grab a player like Amani Hooker, the team will most likely be bringing in a talented safety that could eventually take the starting role.
