The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers will play in Mexico City in November as the NFL attempts once again to play south of the border.
The stage has been set for another Mexico City showdown for the Kansas City Chiefs. This time, they might even play there.
One year after an embarrassing stadium situation that left the Los Angeles Rams unable to “host” the Chiefs in primetime in Mexico City, the NFL is insisting on another attempt to play south of the border. This time, another L.A.-based team, the Chargers, will be the opponent for the Chiefs.
On Wednesday, K.C. officially announced the AFC West rivals will play on November 18. The full NFL calendar has yet to be revealed, but primetime games and other highly-anticipated games are expected to leak throughout the day.
Last season, the league moved the game scheduled to be played in Estadio Azteca to L.A. due to horrific field conditions. Despite plenty of notice, the ground wasn’t at all safe for players given the amount of rain and the state of the turf. This year, the league announced intentions to come back and has built in some accountability to make sure such a scenario never happens again.
The Chiefs are expected to play in primetime on several occasions in 2019 given they were one play away from representing the AFC in the Super Bowl. It also doesn’t hurt that the league’s returning MVP is the team’s starting quarterback in Patrick Mahomes. Here’s hoping Mexico City Redux goes off well. We will find out in mid-November.
