With the NFL schedule set to be released Wednesday night, we take a look at which opponents the Chiefs could face on primetime in 2019.

With the NFL schedule release coming up, it is highly-anticipated that the Kansas City Chiefs will have a plethora of primetime games. The Chiefs have played in plenty of primetime games each of the last two years (5 in 2018, 6 in 2017)—more than any other team.

With Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as the reigning MVP and the team being an overtime period away from a Super Bowl, NFL fans will want to see the Chiefs in the spotlight in 2019.

Here is the list of teams who the Chiefs could compete against in primetime.

1. New England Patriots

This is an obvious one. The two teams met in 2014 on Monday night at Arrowhead Stadium. Although it was a blowout win for Kansas City, the league scheduled these two again in their next regular season meeting in 2017 to open up the season. That led to another blowout win for the Chiefs, opening the season up in a stunner after Kansas City outscored New England 21-0 in the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs and Patriots played each other on primetime in Week 6 of 2018 and in the AFC Championship game in what might have been the two most exciting games of the season.

The NFL won’t miss out on a chance to pair these two teams up on primetime.

2. Los Angeles Chargers

With the Chiefs and Chargers set to meet in Mexico City in 2019, it is very likely that they meet on primetime, especially on Monday Night Football, just like the last two scheduled Mexico City games.

This is another enticing match to have on primetime due to the fact that they both finished with 12 wins in 2018, the most in the AFC. The Chargers snapped a nine-game losing streak in head-to-head meetings against the Chiefs on Thursday Night Football. The Chargers scored a touchdown and went for two at the end of the game to walk out of Arrowhead with a big win.

With the two rivals winning on the road in the two meetings last year, it will be interesting to see how this plays out at a neutral site.

3. Denver Broncos

Since 2013, the Chiefs and Broncos have played each other on primetime seven times in six years. A majority of those games were memorable, coming down to the wire. The Chiefs-Broncos rivalry has been one of the most exciting rivalries in the NFL in recent memory. From the Jamaal Charles fumble to the Cairo Santos post-hitting, game-winning field goal to an epic MNF comeback win, these two teams always make it fun for fans to watch. There’s no reason to believe the NFL won’t schedule them for a primetime game.

4-5. Texans and Bears

Outside of the Patriots and divisional opponents, it is a toss-up as to who the NFL will have the Chiefs face in their other primetime games. But two intriguing matchups the NFL could have on primetime for K.C. would be the Texans and the Bears.

I put those two together for the sole reason of their quarterbacks coming from the same draft class. During their rookie years, Mahomes was a backup, Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky struggled and Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending injury in Week 8.

In their sophomore seasons in 2018, all three first-round picks were voted to the Pro Bowl. In 2018, the three quarterbacks combined for 100 touchdown passes, 33 interceptions and 12,485 yards.

Mahomes vs. Watson and Mahomes vs. Trubisky would be a strong selling point for these potential primetime games since all three quarterbacks were taken within the first 12 picks in the 2017 NFL Draft.
