The need at cornerback is pretty evident to all, and even newly-signed Bashaud Breeland said he’d like to see the Chiefs add more talent at his position.

The Kansas City Chiefs still have a couple major needs to address this offseason, positionally speaking, and perhaps the greatest issue of all is at cornerback. It turns out that even one player newly signed to help at the position would still love to see further efforts made to secure more talent there as well.

Bashaud Breeland recently sat down with the Chiefs organization to chat with team reporter B.J. Kissel about signing with the team, his demeanor and hopes, and whether or not the team will draft someone else at his position. Breeland didn’t shy away from any potential competition. In fact, he welcomed any and all such arrivals.

“I would love to mentor a young guy, and I would hope they’d get a corner in the draft,” said Breeland. “We need all the help that we can. I feel like the guys that they have already aren’t selfish guys. Everybody’s gonna take the young guy under his wing and it’s only gonna make us better as a team. You’re only as strong as your weakest link.”

Breeland is one of the newest defensive additions this offseason, part of a massive overhaul that included imports like Alex Okafor, Tyrann Mathieu, Emmanuel Ogbah, and Damien Wilson. It also includes exports like Eric Berry, Justin Houston, Dee Ford, and Steven Nelson. Nelson’s exit in particular meant that the cupboards were bare at cornerback with only Kendall Fuller as a reliable holdover from the 2018 squad.

The Chiefs now have Fuller and Breeland as dependable vets to go with Charvarius Ward, an intriguing player who flashed real potential down the stretch for the Chiefs. Keith Reaser was recently signed from the AAF after a nice stint in the developmental league, but Reaser has tried to stick before and failed with more than one NFL franchise.

The Chiefs have eight total picks in the draft, and are often linked to a cornerback in one of the first two rounds—where they have three of the first 63 picks overall.
