Patrick Mahomes caught our attention during the season, but in this offseason, he’s captured our hearts as Kansas City Chiefs fans.
Recently we have seen NFL players take to social media to expand their brand and/or allow their personality to shine. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is no different. The 2018 NFL MVP has been very active on social media and has potentially become the most relatable player Kansas City and its fans have ever seen.
Mahomes is arguably the hottest player in Kansas City since Eric Hosmer and the Kansas City Royals went to the World Series in 2014, and then won it all in 2015. How does Mahomes handle the pressure and expectations of a Super Bowl-hungry city? He does what every 23-year old does: plays video games, eats some of the best BBQ around, and hangs out with his friends. It is fair to say that Mahomes is a man of the people.
One thing that most 23-year olds love is Call of Duty, and when the newest installment came out earlier this year, Mahomes took a special trip to Treyarch where he worked on his no-look pass skills to turn out the lights and, later, the competition.
Video games have also been a part of many conversations and interviews for Mahomes. During one interview he revealed what his girlfriend thinks about his gaming habits, “My girlfriend gets a little mad at me sometimes because I’m in the game room playing for three or four hours.” This is a harsh reality most people understand if they have a significant other who does not want to play video games all day.

Playing all of those video games can create a hunger only Kansas City BBQ can satisfy, and Mahomes took to Twitter to show support for a local Kansas City restaurant. Kansas City is well-known for its world-class BBQ and it’s always a topic of discussion when players are asked about what they enjoy about the city. Everyone knows that Mahomes loves ketchup on his food, but I think he will make an exception for some of the finest from Joe’s.
What also makes Mahomes so relatable is his love for his teammatesHe is the clear leader of the Chiefs offense, and with the departure of most of the veteran leaders to include safety Eric Berry, and linebacker Justin Houston, Mahomes will be asked to lead this team. But Mahomes also clearly enjoys being with them off the field. As fans, we feel like we’d want to hang out with him too—not because he is a football all-star, but because he’s an everyman who just happens t be the boss at Top-Golf.
The joy of rooting for Patrick Mahomes isn’t just about the MVP-esque numbers he’s likely to put up for as long as he chooses to play professional football. It’s also about watching a very authentic, accessible, and likable young man enjoy the same activities and aspects of the city that we do. Mahomes has been a man of the people from the beginning, and his humility will likely keep him that way no matter how famous he becomes on the national stage.
