Chris Jones says he’s ready to spend the rest of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs if the team makes that possible.
The latest news to come out of Arrowhead isn’t about free agency or the upcoming NFL Draft in just a few weeks. Instead, it’s about the Kansas City Chiefs taking care of one of their own with a rumored contract extension in the works for defensive lineman Chris Jones.
Jones has been a revelation along the defensive front since he was first selected as a second round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. In three seasons, he’s elevated his game to the point where he was third in the league in sacks last season with 15.5, an incredible feat from the defensive interior.
The Chiefs are making his short-term job a bit more difficult as they switch to a new scheme under Steve Spagnuolo and they’ve also traded away Dee Ford and released Justin Houston. The core trio were responsible for the bulk of the Chiefs league-leading sack total of 52 (tied-Pittsburgh Steelers).
Recently Jones spoke to reporters about the rumors of a deal and said he’s glad to make it happen.
"“I’m excited to be part of the Chiefs organization for longer, you know? Being here four years, I’ve made myself at home. The fans have brought me in. The community has accepted me as who I am and I appreciate that. I want to spend the rest of my career here if that’s possible.”"
Jones is stepping into the final year of his rookie contract and could be tagged after the season if something doesn’t work out for the long-term. However both parties have made it clear that an extension is a priority, including the Chiefs, who have made it clear they are counting on him to lead a new young defensive unit. Jones sounds ready for the task which should bode well for his long-term future in Kansas City.
