The Kansas City Chiefs spent some time with draft prospect Marquis Young, a running back from UMass who turned heads at his recent pro day.
The Kansas City Chiefs are doing their homework for prospects at all levels, from first round selections to options at or near the tail end of the 2019 NFL Draft. The latest player scouts have reportedly spent time with comes from the recent pro day held at UMass, as the Chiefs hung out with running back Marquis Young.
Young, 6’1, 210 lbs., is a four-year starter for the Minutemen and finished his collegiate career with 3,631 rushing yards on 687 carries (good for a 5.3 yards/carry average) and 29 touchdowns. He also caught another 97 passes for 666 receiving yards and 2 more touchdowns through the air.
Young is likely a late round flyer or even a priority free agent, but his value would be there for teams on special teams as well. He returned 40 kicks for UMass over the last two seasons as he’s added some experience to his resume. It’s a smart move that helps him stand out if the Chiefs like the rest of his game.
Young made a bit of a name for himself by leading all players in rushing in this year’s Shrine Game back in January. He had 54 yards on 10 carries in the game and showed he could play alongside players from bigger conferences and schools.
Per Tony Pauline, other teams spending time with Young besides the Chiefs included the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans.
