The Kansas City Chiefs are working with Tyreek Hill’s representatives on what is being called a “record-setting deal” by Ian Rapoport.
Tyreek Hill spent the 2018 season rewriting the Kansas City Chiefs record books, so it’s not much of a surprise to hear the team is working on rewarding him with a contract extension that Ian Rapoport says will be a “record-setting deal.”
The Chiefs wide receiver set a franchise record for most receiving yards in a single season this past year with Patrick Mahomes at the helm at quarterback. Hill finished the year with 1,479 receiving yards, 11 touchdowns, and 87 catches overall on 137 targets. His presence on the field forces defenses to respect the entirety of the field and creates mismatches for other players if he cannot create one himself.
Hill has been a revelation since entering the league as the Chiefs fifth-round selection in the 2016 NFL Draft. Hill has made the Pro Bowl each year, beginning as a returner before making the switch to full-time wideout in 2017. He’s grown with each passing year as a route-runner and has excelled when asked to do more.
Hill is nearing the end of his rookie contract with the Chiefs, but it’s clear that both sides are making plans to go ahead and lock up a long-term relationship. Both Hill and defensive lineman Chris Jones are players expected to garner serious extensions around the same time as members of a memorable draft class. Jones made waves this year with 15.5 sacks from the defensive interior.
It’s unknown whether or not Hill’s deal will set records for both overall money or guaranteed money or average annual value, but the Chiefs will be paying plenty of money regardless.
If Hill’s contract is going to set records on overall value, then that means the Chiefs are prepared to go over the $18 million averaged annually by Odell Beckham, Jr., a wideout for the New York Giants. Beckham signed a contract worth a total of $90 million. Other comps include Mike Evans at $16.5 million annually, Antonio Brown at $17M, and two players at $16.2M (Brandin Cooks and DeAndre Hopkins).
Hill just turned 25-years-old earlier this month.
