Montez Sweat turns heads with 40-yard dash at 2019 NFL Combine
By Matt Conner
Defensive lineman Montez Sweat turned heads in Indianapolis at the 2019 NFL Combine with an incredible 40-yard dash time of 4.41 seconds.
Montez Sweat was already a rising star in the 2019 NFL Draft with a strong Senior Bowl showing and a skill set that has scouts raving about the Mississippi State star. Now the defensive lineman can add “record setter” to his resume with his incredible time in the 40-yard dash at the 2019 NFL Combine.
On Sunday, Sweat ran a record-setting time of 4.41 seconds (for defensive linemen) in the 40-yard dash in front of NFL coaches, general managers, and scouts.
Sweat measures in at 6’6, 260 lbs. yet put up a time that bested every single wide receiver except for seven and every running back except for two. That combination of size and speed will have positional coaches salivating in war rooms, as they fight to work with such a player.

As for the Kansas City Chiefs, Sweat has an official meeting formally scheduled with the team, and the need is certainly there, especially if rumors come true that the Chiefs are open to trading either Justin Houston or Dee Ford this offseason. Other potential edge rushers like Tanoh Kpassagnon and Breeland Speaks are yet unproven and the Chiefs will want to give new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo plenty of bodies to use along the defensive front.
Unfortunately for the Chiefs, Sweat’s rising stock and crazy performance at the NFL Combine might elevate his stock a bit too far for the Chiefs to even trade up. Right now the Chiefs sit at No. 29 overall in the draft and Sweat has been available in mocks around that point from time to time. Now they will likely have to trade up to take him.
Sweat had 9 sacks last year and 50 total tackles for Mississippi State.
