Former Chiefs running back Kolby Smith and coach Chad O’Shea have both taken on new coaching roles this offseason at Rutgers and the Miami Dolphins.

A couple of former members of the Kansas City Chiefs organization recently found new coaching roles this week at the collegiate and professional levels.

Former Chiefs running back Kolby Smith was just announced as the new running backs coach for Rutgers University, while former Chiefs coach Chad O’Shea landed his first coordinator role in the National Football League after being named the Miami Dolphins new offensive coordinator.

Smith entered the NFL as the fifth round choice of the Chiefs in the 2007 NFL Draft out of the University of Louisville. He spent three years in Kansas City and finished his pro career with 162 rushes for 540 yards and 3 touchdowns. After short stints trying to catch on with the Denver Broncos and Jacksonville Jaguars, Smith turned his attention to coaching in 2012.

In 2012, he was a strength and conditioning coach at Arkansas and got his first positional coaching job the following year as running backs coach for Western Kentucky. The year thereafter he got the same role at his alma mater, which is where he has been before joining Chris Ash’s staff at Rutgers to coach the same position.

O’Shea’s coaching career began at his alma mater, the University of Houston, but he took on a volunteer assistant coaching role in 2003 just to join the pro ranks with the Chiefs under head coach Dick Vermeil. From there, he remained with the Chiefs for another two seasons as an assistant special teams coach before moving on to the Minnesota Vikings.

Of course, it is O’Shea’s work with the New England Patriots over the last decade as the team’s wide receivers coach that ultimately brought him the opportunity to move with Brian Flores to the Miami Dolphins. He served with the Pats from 2009-18.
