Tyreek Hill is willing to prove that he’s the NFL’s fastest player
By Matt Conner
Tyreek Hill says anyone who claims to be the NFL’s fastest player is just a “wanna be fast guy” and he’s willing to race them to prove it.
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill has been called the NFL’s fastest player ever since he came into the league three seasons ago. Upon hitting the league, it was clear that whether as a returner, a rusher or a receiver, Hill had a penchant for finding the end zone on a regular basis due to his top speed, an ability to leave the defender in the dust.
Three years later, a handful of players have tried to lay claim to the same tag as the league’s fastest player, but Hill remains not only an elite wide receiver for the Chiefs but he’s also confident anyone else is a pretender.

Two years ago, John Ross was a rookie wide receiver known for being the fastest in his class and the Cincinnati Bengals took him at No. 9 overall in the draft in order to mimic the sort of downfield threat enjoyed by the Chiefs, especially as they hoped to take pressure off of A.J. Green. Unfortunately, injury ruined his rookie season and he only put up 210 receiving yards in 2018.
Marquise Goodwin, 49ers wide receiver, is a solid bet as a competitor given his legitimate history as an Olympic runner. Even then, Hill is unphased by the competition. Speaking from Super Bowl festivities in Atlanta, Hill said he’s willing to defend his title in an actual footrace to prove he remains on top as the league’s fastest player.
"“If they bring back the Pro Bowl’s fastest man, I wouldn’t mind going every year just so I can prove a point to all these wanna-be fast guys,” Hill said."
In terms of top speeds clocked this year in the NFL, Hill is the only player with two appearances in the top 10. He reached 21.95 miles per hour in Week 1 hauling in a 58-yard touchdown reception—good for fourth in the league. He also his 21.78 mph on a punt return during the same game against the Los Angeles Chargers. The top speed clocked in the league last year belongs to Matt Breida, also of the 49ers, who hit 22.09 mph in a Week 12 run. Others measured faster than Hill in 2018 include Vikings running back Dalvin Cook and Patriots safety Devin McCourty.
Certainly the Pro Bowl would be much more entertaining if competitions like this were in place. It’s clear that Tyreek Hill really does care about this label given his discussion of it, and as Chiefs fans, it’d be a lot of fun to watch him show his speed against the NFL’s best.
