Patrick Mahomes named offensive MVP in his first Pro Bowl appearance
By Matt Conner
While some players will pass on making a trip to Orlando to play in the Pro Bowl, Chiefs starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes relished his first appearance.
The 2019 Pro Bowl represents one of the final major moments in a dream season to remember for Patrick Mahomes.
Last year at this time, the Kansas City Chiefs were clearing the depth chart via a trade of Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins to officially pass the starting quarterback’s torch to Mahomes, allowing him a drama-free offseason to learn and lean into the role. Ever since that moment, Mahomes has taken to the position like few in NFL history with an MVPesque season and first Pro Bowl nod among numerous other accolades.

On Sunday, he joined four other Chiefs teammates in Orlando, Florida at the NFL’s version of an all-star exhibition. As the AFC’s starting quarterback, he completed 7 of 14 passes for 1 touchdown and 156 passing yards. In the end he was named offensive MVP.
After he exited the game, he was asked about how this last year lived up to childhood expectations of making the pros.
“You dream about it, but until you’re actually here and just enjoying being a part of this process—the Pro Bowl, the season, and being around a lot of great people. You really can’t measure that when you’re a little kid.” said Mahomes. “…The coolest part is being around all these guys. Everybody’s going for the same goal. Everybody knows to take care of each other in the game, but at the same time, we’re competitive and we want to win.”
Several other Chiefs enjoyed solid performances in the Pro Bowl at Camping World Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Anthony Sherman was the only player to go for over 100 yards from scrimmage with a surprising 92 receiving yards on 3 catches and 11 more rushing yards on 4 attempts. Tyreek Hill had 3 catches for 23 yards and another 2 rushes for 24 yards. Dee Ford had 3 tackles on the day for the AFC.
Mahomes was not only named to the Pro Bowl, but he was honored as a first-team All-Pro by the Associated Press, the Pro Football Writers of America and Pro Football Focus. The only major moment left—and perhaps the biggest moment of all—is the likelihood that he will be named the Most Valuable Player for the 2018 season, a rarity that even greats like Drew Brees have never earned despite having a Hall of Fame resume.
Mahomes finished his first season with a 12-4 record in the regular season and brought the Chiefs their first home postseason win in decades with a Divisional Round victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Mahomes finished with 50 passing touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also threw for over 5,000 passing yards, making him the second quarterback ever in the 50/5,000 club.
