3. EDELMAN TOUCHED IT

The Chiefs also got cheated when referees initially ruled that Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman muffed a punt, but then overturned the ruling. It looked like the Chiefs came up huge on special teams after Edelman made a massive judgment error, but once again the call went in the Patriots favor.

Per the initial call on the field, Edelman touched the ball and Chiefs wide receiver Gehrig Dieter recovered. Dieter also ran the ball into the end zone for a score, but because the ball cannot be advanced after a muffed punt, the Chiefs would have taken over at the Patriots’ 26-yard line. Instead, the call was overturned and yet another call went in the Patriots’ favor.

Just two plays later, Chiefs safety Daniel Sorensen picked Tom Brady off after a Julian Edelman deflection, so no harm was done. However, there was clearly no indisputable evidence that Edelman did not touch the ball, and the call should not have been overturned. Calls seemed to go in the Patriots’ favor all night, and this was one of the most frustrating.
