The Kansas City Chiefs have added defensive back Chris Cooper to the team’s practice squad on Tuesday.

Defensive back Chris Cooper has signed with the Kansas City Chiefs and now occupies a spot on the team’s practice squad.

Cooper entered the National Football League in 2018 as a rookie free agent after going undrafted. The NFL hopeful out of Stony Brook was an intriguing small-school prospect who landed with the Indianapolis Colts immediately after the draft.

Cooper, a 5’11, 200 lb. prospect, profiles as a safety in the NFL and earned a sizeable signing bonus with the Colts when he first landed in Indy. He was later waived with an injury settlement which set him free despite signing an initial three-year deal with the Colts. The Cincinnati Bengals signed Cooper for a short stint in December and the Chiefs recently signed him to replace Horace Richardson, a cornerback recently signed away from the team’s practice squad by the Denver Broncos.

In 13 games last season for Stony Brook, Cooper had 88 tackles and 1 interception. During his school’s pro day, he was able to showcase nice speed (with a 40-yard dash time in 4.43 seconds) to go with his solid size. He also had 17 bench press reps and a 35-inch vertical.

In terms of his signing, there’s very little to read into it. The Chiefs found a fringe prospect they like and signed him, and he faces the same extremely long odds as any other undrafted free agent trying to crack a team as deep as the Chiefs. There are a lot of question marks at the safety position, which works well in Cooper’s favor, but it also means there’s likely to be significant attention paid to the roster at that spot in both the draft and free agency.
