The New York Jets are expected to fire Todd Bowles soon, which means a team like the Chiefs could bring him in as defensive coordinator.

We’re 24 hours away from Black Monday but the leaks have already started coming via NFL rumors on some head coaches who are heading toward the unemployment line. The latest rumor is not good for Todd Bowles with word that his tenure with the New York Jets is nearing its end.

The Jets are reportedly already interested in new head coaching candidates like Mike McCarthy, former head coach of the Green Bay Packers, and Jim Caldwell, formerly of the Detroit Lions, per NFL.com reporter Nick Shook. That means that Bowles is all but officially done after four full seasons with the Jets.

Bowles initially enjoyed an impressive freshman season as a coach with a 10-6 record despite the lack of a true franchise quarterback. Since then, the team stalled and sputtered in performances both inside and outside of its division. If the Jets lose to the New England Patriots on Sunday, the Jets will finish with 12 losses on the year following two straight seasons of 11 losses each.

Despite the Jets overall rankings, Bowles came into the job with a strong resume as a defensive coordinator. Bowles served as the Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator for the two seasons prior to landing the Jets head coaching gig and the year before that, in 2012, he served as Andy Reid‘s secondary coach and defensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles—Reid’s final year in Philly.

Bowles’ availability should at least be a talking point for the Chiefs this postseason and offseason as they make long-term decisions about the team’s coaching staff. The Chiefs have the ability to lock up the top seed in the AFC, but they are doing so despite a porous defense. The Chiefs have allowed more first downs (399) than any other team through 15 games (45 more than the next worst team). They’re also allowing runners 5.0 yards/carry, tied for worst in the NFL. The consequence is that the Chiefs have lost a few games in which the offense should have scored more than enough points to win.

The poor performance largely hangs on Bob Sutton’s shoulders at this point, which is why most Chiefs fans won’t be happy until Sutton is either fired or forced to step aside in some capacity. Bowles’ relationship with Reid and experience could make him a nice candidate to step in for an interview.
