Patrick Mahomes is one of six members making up a new collective called the Asterisk Collective. Here’s what it seems to be.

Consider this the first wave of Patrick Mahomes in the spotlight. If this is his first step, this should be an inspired and interesting ride.

Earlier this week, Mahomes and a handful of other athletes and artists teased a new project entitled the Asterisk Collective. Mahomes and the others posted a tweet with a recording of their own voice backed by the same graphic giving some indication of what was to come. Here’s Mahomes quick transcript from the tweet:

“The world is constantly changing, so I’m doing something about it and bring some love and support with bravery, courage, and action and providing access and exposure to new ideas to create a brighter future together and empower creativity for good.”

The quote reads like a mission statement and gives a bit of insight into the deeper work being planned by the six involved, a group that includes Mahomes as well as five others:

  • Candace Parker, the former first overall pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft and star player for the L.A. Sparks.
  • Kid Cudi, a rapper and actor who recently dropped an album under the name Kids See Ghosts with Kanye West.
  • Gabi Wilson, a.k.a. H.E.R., an emerging R&B singer signed to RCA.
  • Raury, a young singer-songwriter who mixes elements of roots music and hip-hop. (Author note: his 2015 album, All We Need, was a personal fave that year.)
  • Donovan Mitchell, star shooting guard for the Utah Jazz.

Recently Foot Locker and adidas have shown themselves to be corporate sponsors of the Asterisk Collective. A page hosted on Foot Locker’s website shows a bit more about the vision for the collective from the perspective of its members. For Mahomes it reads:

"Patrick Mahomes has always had a passion and mission to inspire hospital patients through sport. He will amplify this mission by creating a platform to evolve his outreach, impacting communities on a larger scale."

It sounds as if the Asterisk Collective is intended, in some way, to be a social platform for positive change. It could help provide a voice to those without one. It could share stories that need to be heard. It could promote art or endeavors to help further these causes, and it might also link together like minds.

Next. Alex Smith deserves better than this tragic injury. dark

At this point it’s all in its infancy, but it’s clear that Mahomes’s journey into sponsorships and endorsements will be a thoughtful one.
