Charcandrick West brings energy, leadership to Kansas City Chiefs locker room

The return of Charcandrick West to the Kansas City Chiefs also means the return of his leadership, excitement, and energy to the team.

Charcandrick West made it clear he was ecstatic to return to the Kansas City Chiefs. In fact, he called it home. But what’s also been made clear through various members of the team meeting with reporters since his return is that the team is just as excited to have him back.

West was first let go by the Chiefs about one week before regular season rosters were due to cut back to 53 players from the preseason limits of 90. It’s a massive cut that leads to many players becoming unemployed, and the Chiefs gave West a bit of a headstart in the process by cutting him a few days early. West caught on quickly with the New York Jets, but unfortunately couldn’t hold on to that job. Since Week 1, he has stayed in shape as well as stayed by the phone.

Now that he’s back, West and the team’s coaching staff has made it clear how much of a great fit he is for the team at this point. He’s not only familiar with the schemes, the city, the locker room, but he’s also going to help fill a leadership role—one that’s likely needed after the team has taken a hit with the release of Kareem Hunt.

On Thursday, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was asked about West and what he brings to the team. It was clear how much he’s appreciated for his intangibles as much as anything he does on the field.

"One thing about [Charcandrick West] is he is an energy giver. He’s a leader, he’s had a great deal of success here and also he’s been viewed as a role model by his work ethic and how he conducts himself on the field … He’s been a huge morale booster since he’s been back and obviously, if you guys have been around him, he always has a smile on his face and everyone around him, he puts them in a happy place."

West himself described his return to K.C. as a homecoming in remarks to reporters on Wednesday.

"“It’s like coming home—like I went on a little vacation and can now come back to all my brothers, and to Chiefs Kingdom,” he said. “The way they welcomed me back, it’s really an honor.”"

West will take the field as a member of the Chiefs for the first time on Sunday when the team hosts the Baltimore Ravens in a tough AFC battle in Week 14. The Chiefs are 10-2 and hold the top spot in the AFC, but it will be hard to maintain that spot with a stretch that also includes the Seattle Seahawks and the L.A. Chargers.

Here’s hoping West can help fill the loss of Hunt and help keep the Chiefs on top as they head into the postseason.
