Is Kelvin Benjamin on his way to the Kansas City Chiefs?
By Matt Conner
This is all complete conjecture based on a few posts on Twitter, but a handful of people are saying Kelvin Benjamin is on a flight to Kansas City.
Let’s get the ultimate disclaimer out of the way: all of this could mean nothing.
While perusing Twitter on Thursday for signs of news or updates of any kind, however, I couldn’t help but notice that more than one person was pointing at a certain passenger on their flight to Kansas City with the belief that it was none other than recently released wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin.
In case you need a quick review, Benjamin was a first-round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2014 who never lived up to his draft billing (and created drama with a seemingly selfish approach). From there he was traded to the Buffalo Bills just last year for a third-round choice but even that failed to work out. Earlier this week, the Bills released Benjamin outright and he went unclaimed on waivers. Benjamin is now a free agent.
Back to those tweets:
If Benjamin is, indeed, on his way to Kansas City, it could still be entirely personal (read: non-football related). Benjamin is no longer employed. He’s a free agent and not a single team claimed him. Maybe a favorite musician is playing in the area. Maybe he has family in K.C. Maybe he wants to visit friends who are even on the Chiefs. Maybe he just wants to come and witness first hand what a world-class offense looks like.
Or maybe, just maybe, Kelvin Benjamin is coming for a free agent visit.
We will know soon enough, but let’s be clear that this could be—could be—an exciting venture. The upside is that Benjamin is a very physical receiver (if he applies himself) with the length and catch radius to do real damage where it counts: in the end zone. He’s built like a linebacker at 6’5, 240-plus pounds yet he’s got the agility to play the part as a physical possession receiver. Unfortunately, Benjamin also comes with plenty of baggage and two failed attempts to make it so far in the league.
For now, all of this is a stretch because we don’t even know that Kelvin Benjamin is really, truly on a plane to Kansas City. And if so, we’re not certain what he’s doing if/when he arrives. But if this is a football-related move, it will be very, very interesting to see what sort of vision the Chiefs could have for Benjamin on this roster.
