Running Backs Continue To Be A Problem For The Chiefs Defense

After spending the entire offseason finding players to help against the rushing attack, the Chiefs still struggle to stop the run. David Johnson while being one of the best running backs in the league, has not looked like his 2016 breakout season coming off his 2017 injury. That was not the case against Kansas City as he ran the ball 21 times for 98 yards and a touchdown averaging 4.7 yards per carry.

Johnson was also explosive coming out of the backfield in the passing attack. He was the Cardinals’ top receiver on the day catching seven passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. We’ve all been asking for more of rookie Dorian O’Daniel for this exact reason. Given that Anthony Hitchens did not hit the field on Sunday, O’Daniel and undrafted rookie Ben Niemann saw more playing time. Johnson only brought in one catch on two targets for ten yards against O’Daniel. Against Niemann, he brought in two catches on two targets for 47 yards. Unfortunately, O’Daniel struggled against the rushing game vs. Arizona.

Given that the Chiefs are going to be playing against Todd Gurley this upcoming week, fans have every right to be concerned. Gurley is not only a talented runner but one of the best coming out of the backfield in the passing attack. This has been an area of major weakness for Kansas City’s defense and I would like to see O’Daniel get more playing time one on one against Gurley to help limit some of that in Monday’s showdown.
