The powerful Kansas City Chiefs offense might be tested a bit in the coming weeks to see if it can remain as dominant with Sammy Watkins potentially out.
If you watched the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, then you’ll likely remember a late injury that was a bit concerning when wide receiver Sammy Watkins exited the game after trying to stretch a catch into a first down.
On the play it was clear Watkins suffered some sort of foot injury and now that same injury might keep him out going forward in the short-term. He reportedly had an MRI on his foot and is dealing with pain after the game despite returning to play against the Browns.
Ian Rapoport has word on the nature of the injury and what it means:
Watkins has proven to be a key cog in elevating the Chiefs offense from dangerous to historically great. With Watkins in the line-up and Patrick Mahomes under center, the Chiefs have three of the NFL’s top 30 in receiving yards, including two in the top ten with Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill. Watkins has proven to be a breakout threat if defenses key in too much on others in the line-up, making the Chiefs nearly impossible to defend.
For the short-term, the Chiefs face the Cardinals this week which would be a good game for Watkins to miss considering the Cardinals are likely the worst team that K.C. will face this year. If Watkins needed a few weeks off, the Chiefs also have their bye week coming in three weeks, which could give him a nice stretch to rest. Unfortunately a showdown with the only other one-loss team in football sits in between against the L.A. Rams.
Watkins’ status will be something to watch going forward to see how much time he will miss. At the very least, it seems like the Chiefs will prep for the Cardinals with a limited offense (relatively speaking).
