NFL standings, Week 9: Kansas City Chiefs tie L.A. Rams for NFL’s best record

Week 9 is in the books and the Kansas City Chiefs are now tied with the L.A. Rams for the best record. Let’s take a look at the full NFL standings.
Heading into Week 9 of the NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs were a game behind the undefeated L.A. Rams at 7-1. The Chiefs took a trip to Cleveland to play the Browns and won, while the L.A. Rams went to New Orleans and lost to the Saints. The Chiefs and Rams are now tied at 8-1 for the best record in the NFL.
Elsewhere in the AFC West, the Oakland Raiders took a trip to San Fransisco and lost to the San Fransisco 49ers on Thursday night. The Denver Broncos stayed at home and lost to the Houston Texans. The Los Angeles Chargers visited the Seattle Seahawks and escaped with a narrow win.
The Chiefs took on the Browns and, as expected, won easily. In the end, (only) 16 points separated the two teams, but there was never really a moment that caused any concern—the Chiefs were in control all game. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for his 8th straight game with 300+ passing yards, as well as another hat trick of passing touchdowns. Ultimately, he finished the day completing 23/32 attempts for 375 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception.

The two Ohio natives Travis Kelce and Kareem Hunt enjoyed their return to Ohio. Tight end Travis Kelce was the Chiefs leading receiver, catching 7 passes for 99 yards and 2 touchdowns. On the ground, running back Kareem Hunt had another great day, rushing 17 times for 91 yards and 2 touchdowns while also catching 1 pass for 50 yards and 1 touchdown. Being strong offensive performances, the Chiefs won 37-21.
On a side note, perhaps the best stat of the season is the fact that the Chiefs have not lost a coin toss all season—including preseason. They’ve gone a perfect 13-0 so far. The odds of this happening are 1 in 8,192… the same odds of the Raiders winning another game this season.
Speaking of the Raiders, their season got even worse as they faced 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens who, prior to the game, had never thrown an NFL pass. Mullens ended up putting up amazing numbers, throwing for 262 yards and 3 touchdowns. For the Raiders, quarterback Derek Carr threw 21 times, completing 16 for 171 yards and ended up being benched for AJ McCarron. The Raiders ended up losing 34-3.
Broncos quarterback Case Keenum completed his first game this season without throwing an interception. He ended the day completing 26/42 attempts for 290 yards and a touchdown. Running back Phillip Lindsay took over for the injured Royce Freeman for the second straight week, rushing 17 times for only 60 yards, also catching 2 passes for 24 yards. The Broncos ended up falling at home by 2, 19-17.
The Chargers ran into kicking woes once again, which resulted in them cutting kicker Caleb Sturgis on Monday. Sturgis missed two extra point attempts and a field goal, making the game much closer than it should have been. Running back Melvin Gordon had a monster game in his return from a hamstring injury that kept him out of the week 7 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He finished the day with 16 carries for 113 yards and 1 touchdown. The Seahawks had a chance to win it after a defensive pass interference call allowed them to get the ball at the 1-yard line and a free, untimed play. However, a false start penalty backed them up 5 yards and ended in an incomplete pass, letting the Chargers win 25-17.
