With the trade deadline looming, will the Kansas City Chiefs make a splash? Here are five players the Chiefs could add and the chances a deal happens.
Ever since news broke that the Kansas City Chiefs nearly traded for Earl Thomas, Chiefs Kingdom has been speculating and salivating over every defensive player who finds their name churning through the rumor mill.
As the trade deadline draws near and the Kansas City defense continues to struggle, it makes sense that Brett Veach and his crew would pull the trigger on one of the playmakers who is rumored to be available. Let’s take a look at five players who could be in red and gold by the end of the week.
Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, FS, Green Bay Packers
Why it makes sense
Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is one of the best young safeties in the game today. The Packers are reportedly open to moving Clinton-Dix before the deadline. Clinton-Dix is a free agent this off-season poised to cash a very large check. It is worth noting that Ian Rapoport specifically named the Chiefs as a team interested in Clinton-Dix. This seems like it could be an easy match. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is a natural center fielder who would be a valuable upgraded in the Chiefs secondary.
What might stop the deal
The biggest issue is that Clinton-Dix is going to be a free agent, and the Chiefs will likely have to pay a high price just for the right to rent him. I am not particularly a fan of this idea, but Veach has shown an aggression when it comes to filling holes on the team. Additionally, the Packers are a team in contention and may decide that dealing a good player to another competitive team may not be in their best interest.
Cost and Probability
I imagine the Packers are hoping to get at least a 3rd, more likely a 2nd round pick for Clinton-Dix. I imagine the market for Clinton-Dix will be pretty steady, and there will likely be some teams willing to pay plenty for him. I do believe the Chiefs are interested but may be outbid by another team. On a scale from 1-10, I would give the chances of this happening about a 6.
