Kansas City Chiefs should benefit from NFL’s overall defensive struggles

Although the Kansas City Chiefs are coming off a loss and have plenty of issues on defense, there is one reason to believe why they’ll still make it far.

The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off a heartbreaking loss after they rallied to come back against the New England Patriots and fell by three as time expired. But despite the loss and the fact that Kansas City’s defense has been a liability, there are plenty of reasons to feel optimistic about Kansas City’s chances in finishing the regular season as one of the best teams in the AFC.

The biggest reason is due to the lack of a stout and consistent defense from any team this season. Specifically, in the AFC. The Chiefs, it seems, aren’t the only team to struggle on that side of the ball.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been tabbed as the league’s best defense for a majority of the 2018 season. However, the Jaguars have surrendered 70 points in the last two games combined, including 30 to Kansas City.

Right now, in order, Baltimore, Dallas, Tennessee, Chicago and Seattle have allowed the fewest points in the NFL. Yet only the Ravens have a 4-2 record while Chicago is 3-2. The rest of those teams are at .500.

If you are a Chiefs fan reading this, you don’t feel hopeful because of Kansas City’s defense. But because Kansas City’s offense has been one of the best this season, it helped the Chiefs to start 5-0 with a last-second loss to New England as the lone blemish.

With two-thirds of the season left to go, the Baltimore Ravens appear to be the only major defensive threat in the NFL right now. They have allowed a league best 12.8 points per game with the Dallas Cowboys being a distant second at 17.2 points per game. Baltimore is also allowing an average of 270.8 yards per game, which is the best average by almost 36 yards.

The Chiefs high-powered offense will only face three teams that are currently in the top 10 in points allowed, Baltimore, Seattle and the Los Angeles Rams. The Chiefs already put up 30 points against the Jaguars in Week 5, who had the best scoring defense at that time.

As far as teams who are in the bottom half in points allowed on Kansas City’s schedule, the team will face Cincinnati, Cleveland, Arizona and Oakland twice.

Critics are correct in pointing out Kansas City’s imbalance with one of the worst defenses this year, allowing the most yards per game and the sixth most points. But the NFL does not have many top-notch defenses on display so far in 2018.

With Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his plethora of weapons all around him, this puts the Chiefs in position to win a lot of their games and should make them one of the top betting favorites in not only finishing the regular season with one of the top two seeds, but likely representing the AFC in the Super Bowl this season.
